India is a population of more than 1.3 billion people, out of which more than 200 million people suffer from different mental illnesses. The situation is likely to worsen considering the outbreak of Covid-19 and the lockdown implemented nation-wide to break the chain of the spread of disease. Mental Health is a serious concern for the world as it affects people of all age groups. We need to break barriers and help each other, physically and mentally in this battle. We need to create maximum awareness about mental illnesses and encourage people to talk about their problems.

 What is Mental Health?

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO),

“Mental health is an integral part of health and is more than the absence of mental illnesses.” It means that a person may not be showing any signs of mental illnesses and yet can be diagnosed as mentally unhealthy.

 Facts about Mental Health in India

  • In India, one out of every five people suffers from mental illnesses.
  • 50% of corporate India is under chronic stress.
  • India is one of the most depressed countries in the world.
  • Suicide is the third largest cause of death in the 15-35 age group.
  • At least 20 percent of young people experience some form of mental illness.
  • Mental health workforce in India (per 100,000 population) include psychiatrists (0.3), nurses (0.12), psychologists (0.07) and social workers (0.07).

How mental health is treated in India?
The government and policymakers need to address the situation of mental health in India urgently and effectively. Mental health gets a low priority all over the world but much more so in developing countries, like India. National mental health policies must be in place, which not only promotes the treatment of mental health disorders but provides overarching directions on broader issues for ensuring mental health promotion.
How can I improve my mental health?
We need to break the taboo and stigma with mental health and open up about the disorders and symptoms to a professional. It is a general thing for Indians to neglect their mental health, which we need to change immediately. We need to create an environment that promotes healthy living and encourages people to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Here are some ways in which you can improve your mental health –

  1. Communicate – Talking about your feelings can help you stay in good mental health and deal with times when you feel troubled.
  2. Stay Active – Exercise keeps the brain and your other vital organs healthy and is also shows significant benefit towards improving your mental health.
  3. Eat Healthily – Like our body, our brain also needs the energy to function. A diet that is good for your physical health is also good for your mental health.
  4. Find yourself – Every person is different. Explore and find your true nature to gain confidence. Good self-esteem helps you cope when life takes a difficult turn.
  5. Take Help – We are humans and not perfect. If things are getting too much for you and you feel you cannot cope, ask for help. Your family or friends may be able to help.
